| Dear Sloggers
The match against Wootton Bassett proved to be a real grueler of a match! The boys tried hard against a tough team, but were unable to achieve the result we had hoped for. We played against Bassett in the tournaments in the summer and the score was pretty much even, so I was expecting a similar result - and not the 7-1 defeat we got! In the first half, Bassett scored 3 goals, but we were still positive and 5 minutes before half time, 'Steady' Eddie broke through Bassett's defences and scored a brilliant goal. This seemed to shake Bassett, I thought this was the turning point in the game, and we were going to give Bassett a hiding - but it wasn't to be …….. 5 minutes into the second half, a dispute started between Chopper and a Bassett player, which also involved the Bassett player's dad. This kid's dad had apparently made some rude remarks to 'Chopper' which upset him (and quite rightly), so Chopper, upset now, runs to Dad in tears. Coach Woods (being the caring father) storms on to the pitch exchanging obscenities with other kid's dad! I couldn't quite hear what was said, but it sounded like 'Orca', 'Porky' …. 'have you seen lately' etc. At this point, all hell looks like it's about to break loose, Kim is wandering along the hedge row filling her handbag with rocks, Adam is on the pitch squaring up to anybody who wants some, Chopper is in the car park letting down the guy's tyres and Malcolm is running up and down the line running a book offering 2-1 odds on Coach Woods! My photographer friend has his camera in one hand and phone in the other on the line to the Sun offering a full exclusive on soccer violence! I don't think the boys really knew what was going on, or believed it - but once things had calmed down and the Woods clan restrained, the boys got back into the game, but I think they were all upset by what had occurred and with already losing, they were too demoralised to play at their best, and as a result Bassett managed to score another 4 goals. Man of the match went to Josh for a fine performance in defence. All the boys put in some great play and at times looked as if they could pull back a few goals. They all played a great game under the circumstances. Let's hope next time we meet Bassett, the score is more evenly matched! |
